Wayne Hudson was born in Burnie, Tasmania in 1948. He undertook an apprenticeship in the trade of upholstery where he ran his own business for many years. A change in life allowed Wayne to study Furniture Design and Sculpture at the School of Art in Hobart. He graduated with a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) in 2000 from the School of Art,University of Tasmania, Hobart. 

He has an extensive career spanning more than fifty years including six solo shows, 60 plus group exhibitions and several prestigious awards and international residencies.  Solo exhibitions include Props for Social Discourse at CAST(Contemporary Art Service –Tasmania) 2000 and Driftmetal,Salamanca Arts Centre, Hobart.  In 2009 solo exhibition Orange Skin exhibited  at School of Visual and Performing Arts, Academy Gallery, Launceston, Tas, 146Arts, Hobart, Tasmania and 2010 Burnie Regional Art Gallery, Burnie, Tasmania. 

In 2000 Hudson was awarded the Rosamond McCulloch Studio in Paris, from the University of Tasmania and supported by the Australia Council.  In 1993 and 1997 Hudson undertook 2 x 3 month internships at the prestigious Paley Studios, Rochester,New York, USA.  Also in 1993 he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth 11, Art Council of New Zealand Artist in Residence in association with Unitec, Auckland, New Zealand. Hudson has collections at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, Launceston, the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, Hobart, Tasmania, David Duncans private sculpture park, Lake Riley, Queenstown, New Zealand and MONA Collection, (Museum of Old and New Art), Hobart, Tasmania.

Hudson has completed 28 Public Art Commissions in Tasmania and South Australia.  In 2002 he was appointed Head of Sculpture at the School of Visual and Performing Arts, University of Tasmania, Launceston. In 2012 he retired from teaching and has been working within his practice in his studio in Launceston, Tasmania.
