Carlton Cox @ Toowoomba Grammar Art Show
Blenheim Gallery and Garden is very pleased to announce that Carlton Cox is participating in an exhibition at Toowoomba Grammar School Art Show as a fundraiser for the school in March this year.
The Grammar Art Show in Toowoomba is an annual exhibition showcasing a diverse range of artworks from emerging and established Australian artists. Held within the Toowoomba Grammar School precinct, it offers a vibrant cultural experience that brings the community together in celebration of creativity and talent.
Carlton has been developing his skills as a linocut artist for more than 30 years and gradually honing his own original style. Carlton gained his printmaking knowledge from private tuition, University of Tasmania, Glasgow Print Studio, and numerous workshops and/or masterclasses both nationally and abroad.
Carlton’s images are inspired by his local surrounds, travels, and experiences. Carlton uses the traditional technique of linocut, which requires the carving of printing blocks (negatives) that are inked and hand pressed one colour at a time to build up an image in layers.
A small, limited edition of handmade original art works are created from the printing-blocks, each one with its own subtle difference. Each linocut takes several weeks to produce, from the intricate carving process to the hand-pressing of inked blocks onto heavy cotton paper. Carlton’s colours are blended from highly pigmented linseed oil-based inks.
Carlton’s studio is situated in the countryside in Tasmania and provides a tranquil environment in which to work. Printmaking is a detailed technical process where the artist first creates the image as a negative. It is very different to working directly onto paper or canvas. ‘The complicated and challenging technical nature of printmaking is part of the attraction’, says Carlton.
Carlton is also exhibiting new linocuts here at Blenheim Gallery in November this year and working towards that exhibition..
Works on display in the Toowoomba Grammar School Art Exhibition are listed below with images, and they are also available from the stockroom at Blenheim Gallery and Garden – Longford Tasmania.
