To Turkiye and back - Matt Sloane
Matt Sloane has returned from representing Australia in Turkiye at the valuablescraps 2025 sculpture conference.
Matt was born in 1983 in Hobart, Australia.
In his sculptures, he uses reclaimed steel, old tools, and mechanical parts, revealing the hidden elegance in discarded objects. By giving new life to these forgotten materials, Matt transforms them into life-sized animals, showcasing the limitless possibilities and versatility of recycled materials.
In Turkiye Matt made a hawk sculpture to represent what he loves as one of the most powerful and free birds of the sky. Gliding at high altitudes, it carefully scans its surroundings a natural observer and a symbol of freedom. The hawk’s gaze is not only for control, but also for understanding and experiencing life.
This sculpture by artist Matt Sloane represents, on one hand, the power of surveillance, and on the other hand, it connects with the freedom and intuition embodied by the hawk in nature. The use of scrap materials by the artist becomes a tangible expression of transformation, reinterpretation, and strength.
Back in Tasmania we are thrilled that a commissioned sculpture for our clients has now been delivered to Blenheim on his return after this major highlight of his career. A Kookaburra will reside on the north - west coast of Tasmania in a much loved garden space.
